Masters in Counselling Psychology, Masters in Education
Welcome! My name is Elizabeth Brown. My areas of specialty are the treatment of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and grief as it pertains to finding a healthy balance in the self, life, work, and relationships. I am devoted to helping others through my love of learning, research and service to others.
I bring a personal connection to my practice with work experience in Emergency Services, the Military, and over 20 years of teaching mental and physical health and safety prevention certification programs for the workplace and general public. I’ve had the privilege of raising two boys in a life-long marriage, and carry a deep understanding of adversity with respect to health and loss. Life challenges require us to understand what it means to be called upon to navigate the most difficult of circumstances and continue to strive to be well. I believe in the power of human tenacity and resilience and encourage my clients to keep faith in the development and re-construction of their lives.
Psychology is the art of learning and unlearning about ourselves, our ability to open new pathways for recovery and gain strength that sustains us through adaptation processes. I look forward to helping you discover the strength that lies within you to reach your goals.
My volunteer experiences include Bereaved Families of Ontario, Canadian Mental Health Program Delivery, and Women in Crisis. My sense of purpose resides in my passion and commitment to serving my clients with excellence to the best of my ability.
Employing a warm, caring, and inclusive approach, Elizabeth enables trust and strength in her relationships to provide a safe and comfortable environment of empathy and compassion. Respecting her clients as the authors of their own goals, she commits herself as a facilitator in her client’s journey to wellness with their care at the center of treatment.
The therapeutic approach is as unique as the individual. Using a multimodal approach, Elizabeth is able to assess and treat her clients according to their personal needs. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Trauma informed CBT, Person Centered Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Internal Family Systems and treatments that locate and externalize trauma and play supportive roles in developing positive energy to achieve wellness are modalities used in therapy sessions.
Elizabeth’s areas of ongoing research and study are in Internal Family Systems (IFS), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Biofeedback, Brainspotting, and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.
As an avid learner, researcher, writer, and speaker, Elizabeth keeps at the top of therapeutic modalities and interventions to assist her clients in the healing process for healthy living with current and effective approaches.
As the gold standard of therapeutic modalities, Elizabeth incorporates CBT - an evidence-based form of structured psychological therapy used as a treatment plan for a wide range of disorders especially depression and anxiety. With CBT, an individual’s interpretation of life situations involves cognitive, behavioural, affective, and physiological systems and their environment. Focusing on the ‘here and now’, Elizabeth collaboratively works with her clients to recognize and re-structure thinking patterns for successful outcomes.
Using emotions as the guide to interpreting expression, preferences and personal outlook, Elizabeth respects the individual experience that brings the client’s lens into understanding within treatment. Requiring active listening in a non-judgemental and reflective manner allows the development and awareness of feelings to be revealed and foster understanding in order to improve emotional regulation and develop coping strategies.
PCT is a caring and individualized plan that keeps Elizabeth’s clients at the center of treatment and addresses the bio-psycho-social factors that contribute to trauma. Used in combination with other theories and resources, Elizabeth employs shared decision making with a holistic and trauma-informed approach that is non-judgemental, respectful, empathetic in nature, inclusive, culturally-informed, and committed to recovery.
Elizabeth recognizes that her client’s interpretations impact how they see reality and that it helps them to make sense of their experiences. Elizabeth explores change with her clients by collaborative identification, reconstruction and exploration of behaviour to gain favorable outcomes.
Trauma, adversity, and responses to life’s challenges are natural processes that all humans endure, even the strongest and fittest of us all. Elizabeth uses constructive frameworks that are individualized and explain the possibilities and effects of exercised human tenacity and flexibility to overcome adversity.
